Thanks for reminding me about the partition table.

sfdisk -d /dev/hda > sfdisk.dump
if=virgin.mbr of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1
sfdisk --force /dev/hda < sfdisk.dump

This should preserve the partition table and enable the overwrite of the
mbr.
