I used two versions, one older (4.6.11) and the newest developer
version 4.7.18.
Up to know, I had no time for further investigation, but tomorrow
I will know more (I really hope).

I GRUB I also found no difference in an important part. I looked
for all CONFIG_DISKLESS or SUPPORT_DISKLESS (I forgot this here...)
and I saw the changes have nothing to do with this.
In asm.S the network drive is set as default and in common.c
the ethernet stuff is called.

I saw, that the build process results in a little different
way as I did in the "draft", as my GRUB checks online, if it
was booted diskless or not. So I thought in the beginning the
disk booted GRUb and the diskless boot are exactly the same
binary (exepct stage1 vs. nbi header). But there are different
binaries, but the differences do not influence it, in my oppinion
too.

Best regards
        Christoph
