I'll remove the savedefault stuff asap, but the following 
maybe also of interest:

I tried yesterday to check if savedefault works, when
booting from floppy (fd0) as reported by the other: 
it works ok, and on the next boot from either (fd0) or
(hd0) has the default, which was chosen during the 
floppy boot.
