I resolved the problem with the help of the debugging output Leszek
sent to me and have committed a fix to the CVS repository.

I would like everyone with a reiserfs filesystem to test this with
symlinks, plain files and directories, to check that I didn't
accidently break another reiserfs version. If you have problems,
please tell me which version of reiserfs and mkreiserfs you are using.
You can either check out the CVS repository or apply the patch at:

http://subversions.gnu.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/grub/stage2/fsys_reiserfs.c.diff?r1=1.8&r2=1.9

Leszek: This is not exactly the patch I sent your privately. I had to
add small changes to still support old versions.

  Jochen
