Follow-up Comment #9:
Having second thoughts about the direction in which I achieved parity here.
Maybe both `device` and `\X` should be reading their argument in copy mode.
Technically, though, that would break compatibility with AT&T troff. However,
there are no cross-formatter conventions for the format or content of device
control commands in the first place, so I don't expect this to be a practical
issue.
