As Branden says in bug #42473, "A recipe for redefining a special character on
a style-specific basis would be a good thing to have in our Texinfo manual."
This may already be in the pipeline, since the comment was made by our primary
documentation overhauler, but I lodge this report in case the comment was
tossed off and forgotten.
