Details:
The current tmac/hyphen.us in the git repository uses the Knuthian set of
hyphenation patterns (which, for historical reasons, are never to be
altered).
Gerard Kuikens created a newer set of patterns, augmenting the Knuthian set.
Both sets are in the tex-hyphen file
hyph-utf8/tex/generic/hyph-utf8/patterns/tex/hyph-en-us.tex. The current
tmac/hyphen.us takes the Knuth patterns from this file but not the Kuikens
ones.
Werner Lemberg opined in the post archived at
http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-groff/2017-05/msg00080.html that "it
seems a good idea to use Gerard's patterns."
