    groff uses the hyphenation patterns from TeX.  You get the same
    problem with current TeXLive, using the additional set of US
    hyphenation exceptions:

      \input ushyphex
      \showhyphens{backpedaling}
      \showhyphens{backpacking}
      \bye

      -> backpedal-ing
         back-pack-ing

    I've CCed Barbara Beeton <address@hidden>; she is maintaining the
    hyphenation exceptions list.  Please send your other findings to her
    also.

good advice.  i've added "back-pedal" and
"back-pedal-ing" to the list.  the next
installment will probably be released for
the last tugboat issue of the year, sometime
in the fall.
