I invoked it normally -- "../groff-1.18/configure", from my intended
build directory (/home/michael/build/groff-build).  I also retried it with
"/home/michael/build/groff-1.18/configure" to see if the relative path was
confusing things, but that failed in exactly the same way.  (Ie: the
nohup.out files logging the make attempts were identical.)

(Perhaps my directory name confused you.  My "~/build" directory basically
contains everything temporarily on my system in order to compile
something, including the entire source if it isn't already decompressed
somewhere else.

Anyhow, in my setup, proper srcdir = /home/michael/build/groff-1.18, 
and proper object dir = /home/michael/build/groff-build )
