It is deeper. Sometimes I wonder how such elementary bugs can go
unnoticed such a long time -- the problem must have been in groff
since ever.

Even a simple
foo
\f[CW]bar
triggers the bug: the space width in the loop which handles leading
spaces hasn't been saved properly.
Thanks for the report. It is now fixed in the CVS.
