You must add `-m psnew' to the command line to get these characters
directly.
Are you sure that this has changed *after* 1.11? According to the
ChangeLog file, James Clark has introduced psold.tmac in in June
1992...
Nevertheless, 8½ years later I think it is safe to remove the default
use of `psold', making it optional.
