That seems like a good solution that will keep everybody happy.

   I'm not completely happy with that -- you loose some control.  What do
   you think about introducing a new environment variable $GROFF_BIN_PATH
   which defaults to $(bindir), and which will be searched for child
   programs instead of $PATH?
