Follow-up Comment #3:
checkbashisms finds no errors in
tests/{bre,ere,spencer1,spencer1-locale,spencer2}, and no error in
tests/*.script after running "make check" and adding a "#! /bin/sh" line at
the top.
Unfortunately, Solaris sh does not support $(...). We can add a configure
shell feature test to avoid Solaris sh as /bin/sh. But probably all Solaris
systems already have a better shell somewhere, and configure is most likely
picking it up already.
