That would be OK.

No, that's definitely not right.

That's not right either.  Gnulib is doing the right thing.

Another possibility is:

4) Specify RE_NO_EMPTY_RANGES so that [b-a] is valid.

I suppose this would be more backward-compatible with the previous 'grep'.
