It makes my mailer crash.

Also please don't send HTML mail.  Set your gmail account to use 
only plain text.

Equivalence classes not working is not a deficiency of POSIX, but 
most probably of glibc.  Send a bug report to glibc and show them 
some examples from various languages.  For example:

$ touch ééé eee ëëë
$ ls [[=e=]]*
