unfortunately, we have to make a change for 2.5.2.
grep 2.5.1 installed scrips with mere 'exec grep -E' which is clearly

I propose to install the patch attached to this mail.

It's based on the script we discussed here, fails back to $(bindir) if
the executable isn't there, and fixes problems when --program-* configure
options are used.
