Could you clarify the intended meaning here? Are we getting rid of dfa.c
just because it makes life easier? Or because, on average, if we don't use
it performance will be improved?

My concern is, if we can identify which patterns will benefit from
removing the dfa.c and which will suffer, then we should keep it and test
for the condition to decide if we need to use it.

That's my idealist view, which prove impractical :O)
