On my system:
> uname -a
SunOS gimli 5.8 Generic_108528-17 sun4u sparc SUNW,Sun-Blade-100
I ran 'time make check' with grep-2.5.1 and grep-2.5.1a. There is not a
noticeable difference in timing:
grep-2.5.1: 1.49u 3.25s 0:05.25 90.2%
grep-2.5.1a: 1.39u 3.10s 0:05.28 85.0%
Also, none of the tests failed in grep-2.5.1. Does that just mean that my
glibc is up to date (free of the bug that caused the modified test to
fail)?
Similarly, all test for grep-2.5.1 and grep-2.5.1a passed on FreeBSD
4.10-STABLE i386 and FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE.
diff -r grep-2.5.1 grep-2.5.1a gave expected results.
On FreeBSD 4.10-STABLE, FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE, and FreeBSD 5.3-RC1,
configure complained (with the same messages). Compiling failed on FreeBSD
5.3-RC1 but succeeded on FreeBSD 4.10-STABLE and FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE.
The output of 'configure', 'make', and 'pkg_info' on my FreeBSD 5.3-RC1
system are attached. The same output is proudced with grep-2.5.1 and
grep-2.5.1a (naturally). Take a look towards the end of
'typescript.configure.txt' for the error messages. They are pretty much
the same for grep-2.5.1 and grep-2.5.1a on FreeBSD 4.10-STABLE, FreeBSD
5.2.1-RELEASE and FreeBSD 5.3-RC1.
Is it a standard procedure to keep the reported version number (i.e.,
'grep --version') unchanged if the actual code is unchanged?
I currently have access to the following systems: FreeBSD 4.10-STABLE,
FreeBSD 5.2.1-RELEASE, FreeBSD 5.3-RC1, and SunOS 5.8 sparc. I'll be happy
to test stuff on these systems.
Cheers,
TAA
