You're basically anonymous when you use Tor (that's the whole point), so
it doesn't matter in that case if whoever owns the server you're using
is benign; whatever they might be passing along to the NSA most likely
can't be connected to you, anyway.

RMS made a good point some time ago: Surfboard Holdings *says* that
Startpage is private, and DuckDuckGo *says* the DuckDuckGo search engine
is private, but we have no way to verify that. I still prefer using
Startpage rather than Google because of the filter bubble and Google
being a much larger company than Surfboard Holdings, and I think there's
evidence of misdeeds from Google where there isn't of Startpage and
DuckDuckGo (though this is just a vague notion I have and might just be
an assumption), but Startpage and DuckDuckGo shouldn't be trusted, much
less construed to be solutions to the problem of privacy in searching
the Web.
