It should be possible to automatically check for new versions and mark add-ons on the list as "to be re-checked". [1] provides some interesting information. Apparently, the install.rdf file in an add-on either provides an updateURL or (if the add-on is hosted on AMO) there's a standard AMO URL (it doesn't say what exactly) to get that information.
