To use checkinstall, you do "./configure" and "make" as usual, then
instead of "make install" as root, do "checkinstall" as a normal user.
It checks what "make install" would do and builds a package that can
be installed later. However, as I mentioned, you should always make
sure that it doesn't include things that it shouldn't, such as
/usr/bin/ld. Yes, sometimes it does strange things like that!
