Yes.

But since then I have re-run "./configure" and "make clean" and I still
have the same problem.

Absolutely. I just did this to check whether the empty variables above
are the nub of the problem.

To tell the truth, I am experiencing the problem with IceWeasel and
strictly speaking I should not be posting here ...
