Agreed and done.

        Actually, I tried to do things `the-linux-way' first,
but I was forced to `the-MacOS-way' [1] since firewire support (for my
hardware) does not seem dependable [2]. This however sounds as good
news, in double-time: not only the iPod became usable once again
but I actually found-out it hadn't anything to do with the actual
source of the problem. At least now I know what I should work on.

        Anyway, I'm thinking to give my iPod some slack for a while,
till firewire support gets improved [3]. Then I'll try again and give
some feedback. Thanks again Andrian and keep up the good work!


P.S.: Though I've tried a 2.4.xx kernel (2.4.27) I'ld gladly give
       an even older kernel (2.4.18) a shot, if only I could: my
       hardware is of too recent vintage for such things. Oh, well.

[1] I would have done it `the-MacOS-way' in the first place, but I don't
     own a Mac ;( I had to find someone who does. I also couldn't make a
     backup of the firmware nor could I find any other iPod-firmware around
     the net.

[2] `dd' can not read anything else than the entire /dev/sda.
     (can not open /dev/sda1, no such device and stuff --- hhhhmmm)

[3] I would have to reboot again and again till I could finally
     `see' the iPod. I am not courageous enough to keep on using
     such a hardware, mostly because I would probably end up
     reporting phantom errors == waisting the precious time of
     developers.
