I don't buy this argument for a nanosecond, but it's pointless to
discuss it, since I gather from Ulrich that the standards aren't going
to reconsider their backward-incompatibilities at this point.

Instead, let me ask this: is there any truly freely available (and
living) standard?  Not so much for access for myself, but because such a
standard would seem to be more relevant to GNU than the nonfree
standards such as POSIX.  (I'm not saying GNU should ignore POSIX,
that's not realistic, just wondering if there are reasonable alternatives.)
