Upon thinking about this some more, it would seem

would work just as well, because of the irrelevancy of the intermediate
versions, as you pointed out.
However, I don't think it's really worth either rms's, the lawyer's, or
our time to go back and revisit it again. Listing every year of
publication doesn't hurt anything, and maybe even adds a little bit of
human interest, so we might as well do it. That's what I'm going to do,
anyway.
