I seem to have missed the BEGINNING of this "thread" - so I don't know what
is being asked about.

In the '85 Standard, the EXTERNAL phrase is "legal" on:

1) an elementary item (including 77-levels)
2) an 01 level (working-storage OR File sections)
3) an FD

It is NOT valid for a "group item" that is not an 01-level. (Other
restrictions related to REDEFINES, etc also exist)

The '02 Standard keeps the same rules with the addition of the "AS" phrase
to give the external item an external name (useful for communication with

Does this answer the question?  Does the IBM mainframe allow it somewhere
else (in which case, I may have forgotten something).
