OK, I"ll give your new version a try.
1. an rpm install of gnuplot complained of 13 dependencies
   (using fedora 10)
2. got the following errors in make of the latest snapshot:
(using the latest libtool from www.gnu.org/software/libtool)

/bin/sh ./ylwrap external_l.l lex.yy.c external_l.c -- flex
/bin/sh ./ylwrap external_y.y y.tab.c external_y.c y.tab.h external_y.h
y.output external_y.output -- bison -y -d
