The point is
that FIBS has little to no defense against abuse, and any easily available way
to use a bot while playing would kill it. Thus so far the owners of code
allowing to connect the bizarre FIBS telnet interface to a GUI or playing bot
keep their sources closed. If you are looking for a way to use the gnubg board
as a display, that would be feasible. There are FIBS clients in C available
(e.g. KBackgammon) so all you needed to do is to link the gnubg board component
to them. Haven't looked at the gory details, but both the gnubg 3DBoard and the
KBackgammon component architecture should be sufficiently clean to do that.
However,
nobody has done that so far, but I don't think it is rocket science. As for
adding actual gnubg hint support, I would ask you not to do that and in case you
do keep your sources closed.

Gnubg
doesn't work with fibs. I did have a quick look a while ago at creating
a fibs client based on the gnubg interface but gave up as the Fibs interface
(telenet) wasn't at all obvious. Some of the bots playing on fibs
are using the gnubg engine, these are standalone projects, I'm not sure how
they handle the fibs communictaion. Jon
