I made a link from libreadline.so.5 to libreadline.so.4, but it
still wouldn't install.  Next, I tried --nodeps.  It installed,
but it won't run:

RedHat has some "compat" rpms. Try to install compat-readline or wait until I've built new packages (but this can last a few days).
