I tried what you suggested and the 3d board appeared. So that rules out one level of problem.

There is still a lessor problem because the 3D board is very slow. And with acceleration turned off, even the GNU moves on the 2d board are slightly slower, even though my moves appear to be at normal speed.

So for now, I'll just use the 2d board, and maybe look into tweaking my graphic card driver later.

This means that the graphics card driver isn't compatible with the 3d board, try updating the driver or setting the hardware acceleration slightly less than "full". Having a play with any opengl settings for your graphics card may help too.

If the first test fails (i.e. the board doesn't show with no hardware acceleration) then there's probably something wrong with gnubg...
