To Christian: I have gettext-base installed, but not gettext or gettext-devel. Would that be the problem?

To Thomas: I don't usually compile much for Ubuntu. I compiled only gnubg and my graphics card driver, both went ok. Apart from compiling I had hardly any issues at all with software because of 64 bit, 64bit is actually the reason why I switched from Windows to Linux last year because XP- and Vista 64bit really suck ;-)

Ok it is off topic but...

I have a AMD X64 and because of many comments about common stuff
not being compiled for 64bit I loaded 32bit Ubuntu on it

Was that unfounded fear? Have you had many (any) issues running 64 bit?

I am running 7.10
