If I remember correctly, Jim Segrave, who certainly knows more about
this part of the code than I do, believed that he had a better fix or
a better understanding of where the problem was. His fix, however,
didn't work and he never got around to doing the right thing. I'll
re-implement your fix and make a note in the code.
