One step further ... I guess the problem is the 32/54bit mix of

cairo.pc wasn't found before, I put it into the PKG_CONFIG_PATH. Now
I have a new problem:

hread-2.0 -lglib-2.0 -L/usr/lib64 -laudiofile -lm -lpng -lz
-L/opt/gnome/lib64 -lart_lgpl -lm -lpng -lgmp -ldl -lreadline
-lncurses -lm
skipping incompatible /usr/lib/libcairo.a when searching for -lcairo

cannot find -lcairo
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Fehler 1

This happens no matter whether I'm in an ordinary shell or using the
"linux32 bash" trick.
