I intensely dislike this behaviour.

The problem arises because there is a need to save a default player name, and
the settings file is currently the only place to do this.

What I suggest is:
A default name for when a "human" player is selected.
Default names for when gnubg is the player, e.g. Gnubg Expert, Gnubg World
Class.

When an interactive match is started (rather than loaded from file), these
defaults could be set into the names for player 1 and player 0. I suppose that
this would be similar to what happens when a match is imported; the names from
the file are set to player 0 and player 1.

If you were really being a smart-arse, it might be feasible to take the human
name from the users log-on name. Unsure whether this is really useful, though.
