In the hint window it's actually not necessary to press Shift or Ctrl. 
Clicking on a move selects it, another click deselects it. (At least it 
does here.)

No, not really. Could you please relate in great detail what you're doing 
and what messages you get. How do you attempt to load a file, via the menu 
or the toolbar button? Where is this file located? Does it happen with 
every file or particular ones? You could also attach a (preferably 
compressed) match file and send it to the mailing list. You could also try 
to re-install gnubg in a new folder. First the installation archive from 
http://home.online.no/~oeysteij/ and then the latest executable from 
http://users.skynet.be/motiv4u/GNUBgW.htm .
