I don't think we should be hooking directly to a relational
database. We're much better off using a lowest-common-denominator
export of raw data, e.g. CSV files

Is there something similar in Python to Perl's DBI interface? With this it wouldn't matter anymore whether it's a plain text file or an SQL db.
