It shouldn't build the board3d lib, I'm not sure how to do this in the configure scripts if USE_BOARD3D isn't defined.
(a minor nit - there are a lot of C++ style comments. It's not safe to assume that a C compiler will accept these).
I'll remove these (there aren't that many) - I am a C++ programmer after all :-)
