Like Joseph already suggested: Just go for it.
Actually, I've thought of this myself already for quite some time. If you
decide to implement the feature you could consider the following:
I had a solution in mind very similar to the "file" command on Unix, that
is with an external magic file. See the manuals for file (1) and magic (4)
(i.e. here: http://www.bigbiz.com/cgi-bin/manpage). I prefer XML for the
format, however.
In any way, the recognition ought to base on file contents, not file
endings. One could add file integrity tests, although this is probably
already included in the import routines.
If you won't do it, I might eventually. But I don't know yet when,
certainly not very soon.
