I think the idea of a 'Why' button would certainly meet my needs, and wouldn't require the caching strategies/work that have been mentioned. I was expecting that upon close of the 'Why' window that it would immediately change to gnu's turn, but Nardy's requirement that I repick up the dice gives me the option of 'undo-ing' (I admit that I do cheat occasionally :-) ), if I desire to do so.

If people object to having both 'Tutor mode' and 'Hint' available but with slightly different functionality, another thought would be to add an additional checkbox related to Tutor mode, perhaps 'view hints only' which, if checked would give you the 'Why' dialog, otherwise the normal 'Hint' dialog. Then you could make closing the Why dialog immediately pass control to gnu's turn. I'd call this the 'peek, but no cheat' feature :-). In a sense this is for my own self-control in that it allows me to feel that my gnubg rating was not fudged.

My 2 cents:
Change 'Hint' button in the tutor window to 'Why?'
Clicking 'Why?' opens Hint window (but titled 'Why?') with only 'Show'
button active.
(yes, it limits the possibility of further analysis. yet i think 'tutor
mode' is just what it says: tutor mode. and 'Hint' will still be there with
all its features, but seperated from Tutor)

This way, the user can look at the evalutated moves, but can't change the
move he/she made. So GNU Bg knows that (once the Why window is closed) no
need to re-engage Tutor.

The user on the other hand (after clicking OK in Why window) can either undo
his/her move or pass the dice (and does not have to wait this time).
