I expect we could (if somebody were to write and support it)... and
KDE people would also want gnubg to use a Qt widget, and Motif people
would want a Motif widget, and Mac OS X people would want Apple's
dialogue, and they would also want native printing support, nicer
integration with their platform's window manager(s), and so on;
there's no end of things we could do to satisfy certain groups of
users without improving gnubg at all on the platforms which GNU
software is aimed at.

Improving the GTK+ file selection dialogue would certainly be useful
on many platforms (including the GNU system), but it's not really our
job. If anybody would like to direct effort in this direction, I
think they will be best off co-ordinating with the GTK+ people --
enhancing the dialogue is GNOME bug 29087, online at:

    http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=29087

I know that a major overhaul is scheduled for the file selection
widget soon... there was a session in the GNOME 2 summit a few
months ago on it, and I thought it was supposed to happen in time
for GTK+ 2.2. But since that has come and gone without a new
widget, I presume it has slipped back to 2.4.

In the meantime, my preferred approach is to do nothing, in expectation
that we will be able to take advantage of a new improved GTK+ widget
whenever it arrives.

(The current GTK+ widget isn't actually disastrous, even though it is
a bit clumsy, and certainly ugly and unobvious how to use it
effectively. The tab completion works pretty well, for instance.)

Cheers,
Gary.
