I've had a related problem, getting the dice stuck on the board. I enclose an
.sgf file.
I've started a game and gone straight into edit mode to set up the position. I
changed the cube position & turn to GnuBg (see moves 2 & 3). My opening 52
stayed displayed, but moved to GnuBg's side of the board.
This file is from 20021115, but it may be from a slightly earlier build.
