I agree too, and that has never been in any proposal.  It may be
mentioned as an example, but certainly not prescribed as the standard to
be followed by everyone.

Eli, in general, I fully agree that we don't want to change the meaning
of existing variables.  None of the changes being proposed do that, so
far as I can see -- the intention is to clarify the existing meaning.

BTW, I don't think any changes ever have done that, which is fairly
remarkable given that these things have been around for so many years.
Remember Alexandre's explanation of why datarootdir was introduced in
the first place ... precisely so the meaning of datadir did not change.
