gmake check: "FAIL: rpath-NXXf" (ld: fatal error ... -lrpathz)

gmake check: "FAIL: rpath-NXXf" (ld: fatal error ... -lrpathz) |

./configure; gmake seemed to go okay, but "6 of 46 tests failed". Of the
tests that failed, all ended with the letter "f". The error message
indicated some kind of linking problem like "couldn't find library -lrpathz"
or "file librpathx.so tried to include many files."
Solaris2.8, native linker, gcc3.2.2.
