The only think that I can think of, offhand, is that the driver didn't
return the correct error code for end-of-tape for your equipment. If
you can use a debugger to see what errno was when the read failed,
perhaps that will help you see what the problem was.
I'm CC:ing this to bug-tar, which is where bug reports like this ought
to go -- other people read that mailing list and may be able to help.
