Why do you need to do that?  Normally I would think that you can join
N files by reading them all sequentially and simultaneously.

Can you give an example of how it's broken?  If GNU join is broken,
then it should get fixed, and then you can use GNU join.

(It might be useful in other cases for gawk to be able to seek, but I
don't yet see why it's needed here.)
