I also find it annoying.
If anything is a "linux-tradition," it's griping about this `feature'; I
don't recall ever seeing anything but derision for it. If I were the
maintainer, I would have no qualms at all at turning it off by default,
and answering all complaints with `use this option (or set this env var).'
Gnu takes great pride in saying `ed is the standard text editor' -- but
please, make ed standard.
