tar feature broken ??

Hi,

For some reason I used to be able to exclude an entire
subdirectory with tar on slackware 3.6, however
It seems that maybe this isnt working in the new slakware 7.1,

Here is an example of what used to work.
tar -zcf /root/archive/aw1.www.tar.gz/usr/www/* \
--exclude=/usr/www/users/jim/*

any ideas ??
