grep bug? -f option

I'm new to the grep command, but...

 

the -f option doesn't seem to work

eg, i have a file called pat containing some words for use as patterns

and a file called test with a list of test words

then

grep -f pat test

doesn't seem to output anything, even if some pat words are in test
