There seems to be several issues here.

I don't think that syntax files were ever intended to be opened like that.
Perhaps this feature should be added.

This indicates that the system doesn't recognise the "application/x-spss-sav" 
and
the "application/x-spss-por" mime types.  I have no idea how to configure that
on windows.  Probably a registry setting.  But whatever has to be done, I 
suppose
the installer ought to do it.  Presumably if SPSS has previously been installed
on the machine, then it is already done.

I can only presume this is a Windows vs. Gtk+ problem.  The file chooser must
be trying to do something to the directory.  Perhaps we should try a later Gtk 
version.  Anyway, it's annoying, but not fatal.

I'm confused by this point.  GET FILE should only work on .sav (and .por) files.
I would not expect it to do anything sensible on any other type of file.  If the
dataset did not appear, then what do you mean when you say that it "does open" 
the
file?
