Follow-up Comment #3, bug #24781 (project pspp):

It follows the file type selected by the file type radio box (in the bottom
left hand corner).   If "Portable File" is selected, then the extention is
".por". If "System File" is selected, then the extention is ".sav".

The Combo box in the lower right hand corner is for the purposes of
previewing existing file types.
